S.V.A. "Stonewall Songs" Observations
"Heat Wave" by Martha Reeves
& The Vandellas was such a popular dance and camp fun song at The
Stonewall -- and any other Gay dance club -- that as soon as the
Stonewall Era ended at the very end of 1969, they put the entire
song replete with a Gay dance in the hit Gay movie of 1970: "The
Boys In the Band".
Brenda Holloway's self-written and original-recorded "
You've
Made Me So Very Happy" in 1967 was wisely re-released by Motown Records two years
later in 1969 after the white male rock group Blood, Sweat &
Tears' version hit #1 on the pop charts.
The musically exciting -- besides strongly sung and great lyrics -- "Am I The Same Girl"
by Barbara Acklin was also issued, without the lyrics and replacing the
vocals with a piano, as a gyrating #1 R&B hit instrumental by the Young-Holt
Unlimited trio but entitled "Soulful Strut".
We all found that Candi Staton's song title "
I'd Rather Be An Old Man's Sweetheart Than A Young Man's Fool" to be amazing, long and profound -- and for a certain segment of Gay boy / Gay man life, quite true!
Smokey Robinson & The Miracles's soulful version of "Abraham, Martin, John & Bobby"
was released a year after
Dion DiMucci's original song and added "Bobby" for the U.S. Senator
from New York and leading 1968 candidate for U.S. President Robert Francis
Kennedy ("RFK").
"The Young Folks"
by Diana Ross & The Supremes was both a "B"
side record as the flipside of "No Matter What Sign You
Are" and, later, as an "A" side when, after its growing spot-on 'cause' popularity, it
was re-released by Motown Records as an A-single in the sizzlin' Stonewall Summer of
1969.
