Stonewall Songstress Tribute:

Lesley Gore

Lesley Sue Gore, born in Brooklyn, NYC, raised in Tenafly, NJ, and died in Manhattan, NY, was only 17 years young when she had her #1 international hit song "It's My Party".  It was produced by the now legendary Quincy Jones.  Other hits of Lesley include the following:  "Judy's Turn To Cry" (#5), "She's A Fool" (#4), "That's The Way Boys Are", "Maybe I Know", "Hey, Now", "(Isn't That) The Look Of Love", "Sunshine, Lollipops And Rainbows", "My Town, My Guy And Me" and "California Nights" (also a hit at the original Stonewall Club in 1967).  Lesley's most unique and significant hit is her song "You Don't Own Me".  It was not a pop dance song yet was #1 nonetheless.  "YDOM" evolved as a feminist anthem for five decades and continues as such!  It was later featured in the hit movie "First Wives Club" (1996).  Lesley's first dozen single-release records were produced by Quincy Jones as were most of her album songs.  Because of her pop, girl group and soul combo in sound, Lesley was hired by Berry Gordy and signed to Motown Records in 1972!  Besides Emmy award nominations, Lesley was nominated for an Oscar for co-writing "Out Here On My Own" from 1980's "Fame".  Lesley was portrayed in the Broadway musical "Leader Of The Pack" (1985).  Not only was Lesley a singer, a songwriter and a musican (piano) but she was an actress.  Lesley starred on Broadway in the acclaimed "Smokey Joe's Cafe" in the late 1990s.  Lesley's flipside single hits include "Sometimes I Wish I Were A Boy", double entendre, and the Carole King-penned "(Oh, How I Miss) The Old Crowd", a bouncy song spiced with nostalgia about friends who miss each other, a fitting tribute to Lesley!  Besides her supportive mother and musical brother, and many friends, Lesley is survived by her Gay girlfriend of 33 years Lois Sasson!  Lesley shall live forever through her memorable music!

  * = Top 40 "Songs of The Stonewall" during Stonewall Rebellion week!

1969 note:  "Don't Play That Song"!  Which songs did the Mafia owners ban from The Stonewall?
"Sugar, Sugar" by The Archies (#1 song everywhere else that it was played).  Their reaction to this song was way too bubble-gum and it would 'drive them crazier'!  Also, the mindless "Dizzy" song by Tommy Roe (a #1 everywhere else).  The owners and patrons regarded this as too repetitive and childish.  Actually, the Gay patrons agreed!  The third 'don't play that song' was the odd "In The Year 2525", a verbalization in a weird way rather than sung and the message was definitely bizarre and very "86"!

1969 note:  Which song did the Gay patrons ban from The STONEWALL Club jukebox?  "What Is A Man" by The Four Tops (a very non-Motown song; a bomb everywhere, even R&B).  And, the title?  Ugh!  You can imagine how this "Man" titled song went over with the lesbians and the dykes!  And how about the drag queens?  Oh-no!  All of this is self-explanatory as to why it did not fit at the Gay STONEWALL Club or any GLBT place!  All the other Four Tops songs were hits!

1968 note:  A perfect example of a never-let-in-that-song at The Stonewall Club in the semi-psyhedellic genre was "A Whiter Shade Of Pale".  The title is clearly mindless and so were the weird lyrics.  No one, Gay or straight, knew what it was talking about then or now except likely hardcore druggies referring to white heroin or white cocaine?  In any scenario, it was very un-Stonewall!  It sounded like some kind of funeral march.  Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys stated:  "When I die, play that song at my funeral"!

1966 note:  An outstanding example of a banned song at the Gay Stonewall Club, although a big hit elsewhere, particularly R&B, was "When A Man Loves A Woman" -- for obvious reasons -- by the physically unattractive, one-hit wonder Percy Sledge.  In the Gay World, he was dubbed as "Percy Sludge".  It was clearly not a song that anyone Gay could associate.  When the song came on the radio, the volume was turned off or the station was changed!

S.V.A. "Stonewall Songs" Observations

"Heat Wave" by Martha Reeves & The Vandellas was such a popular dance and camp fun song at The Stonewall -- and any other Gay dance club -- that as soon as the Stonewall Era ended at the very end of 1969, they put the entire song replete with a Gay dance in the hit Gay movie of 1970:  "The Boys In the Band".

Brenda Holloway's self-written and original-recorded " You've Made Me So Very Happy" in 1967 was wisely re-released by Motown Records two years later in 1969 after the white male rock group Blood, Sweat & Tears' version hit #1 on the pop charts.

The musically exciting -- besides strongly sung and great lyrics -- "Am I The Same Girl" by Barbara Acklin was also issued, without the lyrics and replacing the vocals with a piano, as a gyrating #1 R&B hit instrumental by the Young-Holt Unlimited trio but entitled "Soulful Strut".

One of the yearning songs was "The Wedding Cake" by Gay icon Connie Francis.  Its message was that after "the wedding cake", there are many responsibilities to marriage and that all the times won't be great!  Connie sings that "The wedding cake is not all icing"!  Nonetheless, Gay couples, who unfairly and sadly did not have the legal right to marry, yearned for the hope to some day have "the wedding cake" to officialize, solidify and protect their Gay love!

Smokey Robinson & The Miracles's soulful version of "Abraham, Martin, John & Bobby" was released a year after Dion Di Mucci's original song and added "Bobby" for the U.S. Senator from New York and leading 1968 candidate for U.S. President Robert Francis Kennedy ("RFK").

We all found that Candi Staton's song title " I'd Rather Be An Old Man's Sweetheart Than A Young Man's Fool" to be amazing, long and profound -- and for a certain segment of Gay man / Gay boy life relationships, quite true!

"The Young Folks" by Diana Ross & The Supremes (without any actual Supremes) was both a "B" side record as the flipside of "No Matter What Sign You Are" and, considered by some to be Diana's (unbilled) first solo record, later, as an "A" side when, after its growing spot-on 'cause' popularity, it was re-released by Motown Records as an A-single in the sizzlin' Stonewall Summer of 1969.
